Why – BPharm Honours?
BPharm Hons is a 4-year degree for registration (after internship) with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency) There has been a National shift to BPharm Hons Degree as a precursor to the Extended Masters (Doctor of Pharmacy).
Internationally the degrees are: BPharm and BPharm Hons (a 4-year degree for registration [after internship] in New Zealand); MPharm (5 years) in the United Kingdom; and the PharmD (6 years) in the United States of America, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Research/Professional Honours programs are options for the James Cook University Program.
WHY – Pharmacists in community, hospital or other areas of pharmacy such as the pharmaceutical industry, government e.g. Medicare, Australian Defence Force, GP Practice, and Aboriginal Health Services, are required to be familiar with research methodology in order to conduct research in practice.
Research and Professional Honours
Students in the Research Honours stream will undertake an individual research project. The student will select a project topic relating to a relevant contemporary issue in pharmaceutical sciences, practice or clinical pharmacy. Final acceptance – (Research Honours) the individual with a GPA> 5.5 (with a project and supervisor) is eligible to be considered for Research Honours at the end of Trimester 2 in the second year of the 3 year BPharm Hons Program in preparation for the start of Trimester 3, Year 2. Based on capacity there is a limit to the number of students who will gain entry to Research Honours which will depend on GPA, and an interview and a piece of written work (scoping review), undertaken during PC2450 and PC 2550.
